This is a web for IPAD and APPS. You could find a lot of app for music, knowledge, fun, games, draw, etc.

American Association for Pediatric Ophtalmology (Apraxia Ocula Motora)

Oculomotor Apraxia

What is oculomotor apraxia?

Saccades are quick, simultaneous movements of both eyes in the same direction and are abnormal in the condition of oculomotor apraxia (OMA). Most children with OMA must utilize a head thrust to initiate horizontal eye movement away from the straight-ahead gaze position. Typically, vertical eye movements are unaffected by the condition.

Where is the problem with this condition, in the eyes or in the brain?

The source of OMA is in the brain. The process of initiating eye movements is a complicated neural pathway involving many different structures. Neuroimaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly performed when evaluating OMA. Findings may be normal or may reveal poor development of regions of the brain, in particular the corpus callosum, cerebellum, and/or fourth ventricle.

What other developmental problems can coexist with OMA?

Extensive investigations sometimes reveal no associated developmental issues. However, children with OMA often have developmental delays and possess low muscle tone (hypotonia). Speech, reading, and motor delays are common even when neuroimaging studies are normal.

What other clinical associations can exist with OMA?

The wide range of clinical entities that have  been reported in children with OMA include: agenesis of the corpus callosum, Joubert syndrome, Dandy-Walker malformation, microcephaly, hydrocephalus, vermis hypoplasia, porencephalic cyst, megalocephaly, Krabbe’s leucodystrophy, Pelizaeus Merzbacher disease, Infantile Gaucher disease, GM1 gangliosidosis, Infantile Refsum’s disease, propionic academia, ataxia telangiectasia, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, vermis astrocytoma, vermis cyst, carotid fibromuscular hypoplasia, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, and microphthalmos.

What causes OMA to develop?

The etiology of OMA is usually not determined and considered idiopathic. However, the condition is sometimes considered secondary and attributed to insults occurring either during the perinatal period or the first 6 months of life. Associations may include perinatal hypoxia, meningitis, periventricular leucomalacia, cerebral palsy, septicemia, anemia, herpes encephalitis, and seizure disorder.

If a child has OMA, do siblings or future children have a risk for the condition?

There are no reports of siblings with OMA. It would be extremely rare if other children were born with the same condition.

What is the treatment for OMA?

There is no specific treatment for OMA. Serial ophthalmologic examinations are recommended to monitor for other eye problems associated with OMA.

Does OMA improve over time and resolve?

There are few reports of the long-term prognosis of children born with OMA. The head thrusts associated with OMA typically diminish over time, but tend not to completely disappear. This may represent a true improvement in the disorder or be an adaptive compensatory mechanism to mask the head thrust.

Visit to the Ophthalmologist

A few days ago, Arnau had a visit with the ophthalmologist usual. She is a doctor with a curriculum broad and known ocular apraxia, always confirmed the diagnosis even though we do not know if there is anything else that was related or sparking that decline that prevents neuronal Arnau eyes make movements saccades as those who have no problems.

Whenever Arnau is visited by espcialistas (neurologists, endocrinologists, ophthalmologists, etc), doctors often turn after obtaining the title espcialistas or want to be starting on the espcialidad and have never seen a ocular apraxia and attend as listeners query. But the other day was nothing more and nothing less than five doctors for Arnau, three of whom had not ever seen one like ocular apraxia Arnau, which is manual. (if the disease until my child overboard).

Two doctors are great specialists, heads of the most prestigious ophthalmology departments of Catalan hospitals, even one, and I say this as an anecdote, is a noble title earl (the aristrocacia Arnau at the foot of that command at all times) -well, for this prestigious doctor confirmed that monitoring and nod and shake are proper oculomotor apraxia my little suffering. The doctor also said at one point that treat other eye-tracking would result in a severe ataxia, ocular apraxia as vertical, but all that I knew, and who read the blog too as I have explained all entries where ocular apraxia types that exist.

I'm surprised there are still people who doubt about apraxia. It has nothing to do with visual acuity, with strabismus, with myopia, or damage to the muscles, nerves and channels. The ocular apraxia is not resolved or operations or with glasses, if so is another disease and not be confused. They can live together but have nothing to do.

The  ocular apraxia is neuronal and may sometimes genetic or other causes. It is unfortunate that some public Institutions and other private and do not want to know more about a disease capable of reunior five doctors around a child. But there's more to add, no cure but can live with it, you can enjoy the world and be happy.

This post is only a opinion from me (apraxia06)

Yesterday we went to the doctor. Never had explained in detail that my child attends doctor, but after yesterday's visit I think he deserves it more data. Arnau is visited by Neuropediatrics at Hospital Sant Joan de Deu (among other services also visit, such as ophthalmology and endocrinology). Well, much work in this hospital, serving children in the area, the city, other provinces and even other countries, it has a very good service that has helped many small and their families overcome serious illness.

But I must say that until yesterday I did not feel that sense of appreciation that other mothers have, and it was because of doctor changed routinely, because each visit there are doctors who are forming in his field, because the waits were long and why not say, I was not comfortable with some medical visits that were too short, no opportunity for dialogue and regardless that Arnau was just a medical record number; little heard and less answers our visits to specialists, therapists, physicians, educators became a habit rather than a hope for the improvement of Arnau.

And then we started to look positive, and found to Regina with his horse Tambor, Gisela in pool water, Mariona with his words, Alberto Jo Lee and Sergi on a tatami of Tae Kwon Do and M ª Carmen (last speech therapist Arnau), a group of people who understood Arnau and his problem, he was taken seriously, listened and helped him, and Arnau felt for the first time with each of them as a real boy, rather than the one with that beg to be heard, to play with him, do not take away the things that do not make fun, to tell you that will help.

Yesterday we founda doctor and a other girl medical doctor  and  we were heard and answered. Arnau has a disease name and is called ocular apraxia MOTOR TYPE 1 and is too high, but has no surname. So you have to take tests, functional, X-rays, genetic analysis, and more visits, but I finally know that even doctors know there apraxia after my son and meet and talk before you visit in case of somewhere have discovered more clues. The ocular apraxia is a bastard that has gotten into my life, and I'm gonna to kick, because it's going to stay in the shade and very still, her and all the bad that comes close to my child. With help of this doctor and the nicest doctor who help at visit and was with him and he told me it was the first small saw with ocular apraxia (others also have recognized) and with a clear mind will come to find that name.

Anyway, the people surrounding Arnau have to change our mindset and realize that the bad piece ocular apraxia, which affects the mobility of the eyes, and the motor coordination and speech, but retains the intelligence that earns each day to the surprise of doctors, as it is every day we work hard to Arnau, in knowledge, in power, in love, and the fun and games, and please I want say to some people do not believe that apraxia is as have strabismu because is  more cause if the best neurologists are still investigating.

So from now we feel invincible and if someday you find something else (although the gene is discarded apraxia) and we will continue looking as positive and the doctor told us continue by looking at the evolution of Arnau that is surprisingly good.

And above all, I will ask all parents not to miss the opportunity to speak, to ask, to tell the doctor how you feel they are not soothsayers and doctors but if we do not insist on the need to learn and how we feel may never know.

I think we should show our support to those who are helping our children and that is why I invite you to visit the website of the Hospital Sant Joan de Deu and see what they do, physicians, volunteers and those who work and smile at the children, knowing that some kids are very serious, but it is so important for these children smile as medication and work with this center will help many small.

Autora: Lisa A. Kurtz

Book: How to help a clumsy Child
Author: Lisa A. KurtzMs.

Kurtz is a therapist with a broad curriculum of study, training and professional experience with children with motor problems, who have autism, dyspraxia, etc..And his father was a specialist in pediatric therapies and of course she works at a prestigious U.S. school (and yes .... if we could we would go without hesitation to USA with Arnau).
On the website of college you can see the picture of this lady and she's a kind woman that conveys affection and closeness, but more important is that after reading one of his books had very clear that Ms. Kurtz knows what he speaks.

The book tells us that children are "dumb" may for various reasons, external factors, medical impairements or pathologies .... But a child who has a vision problem so is it usually because the sensory and developmental delays caused that these children are left behind, hence are often teased by others children in school, park etc,  and if to this we add the pressure to which it submits its environment (parents, teachers...), often with good will, saying to go ahead, do not give up, try it now, etc,  the child can get frustrated badly. (that's one thing to accept frustration but another is to become an everyday thing).
It speaks of the Neurodevelopmental Therapy and explains each of the words that you find on the road when our children have motor problems or similar. Actually has a mini-dictionary at the end of the book that helps a lot to understand concepts, acronyms,etc..No doubt the book I recommend, not only because of the way so clear in which is also explained by how easy it can be to help a young, is that with patience and observation, but especially considering each child as a unique case rather than forcing him to be part of a statistic, she explains that for example in writing must have a margin of understanding because if we try everything to have a pattern possibly do more harm than good. On the other hand, it's okay  there are pathologies that are far of this book and other I read and can not be improved ..... or maybe yes!! I apply as many things in Arnau and I see the progress, but of course every one should do he deems necessary and consult with the professionals they rely.

Besides all this, Lisa made a tables of contains in the book really clears to detect hypotonia, to explain the test and how they should do, to tell the therapies help and whoever can make, to do work, etc ....All very clear and concise. The book speaks about balance, how to make bath time, dressing and food are not a good drama, it's great to have the opportunity to read to Lisa A. Kurtz .... it's a shame that this book has been translated into Spanish until 2011 when it was published in 2003. But luckily we can enjoy.
Recommended for everyone (family, teachers and therapists).

Congratulations Arnau and The Oculomotor Apraxia's Day !!!!

Felicitats amor meu!!!!!!!

T’estimem tots.

6 years ago my son Arnau was born. It was a hard day but a wonderful result, our little, a boy full of joy, strength, sympathy, intelligence, kindness, and very very handsome. The funny thing is that one day on April 7, after delivery, Arnau soon opened his eyes to look .......... sideways.

We struggled to understand that look on a newborn, I remember even the nurses said they had never seen a baby look at her.

! How wrong we all were! Arnau not look sideways, had oculomotor apraxia and turned her head to see us, he wanted to know their environment and their eyes were not working but his intelligence made him
look, with just a few hours of life in this world, and found a solution by turning his little head.

When Arnau began to move with great effort and could not move, when his eyes were following no precious objects, when he was diagnosed with Apraxia Oculomotara (OMA is the english abbreviation), we decided to look for information to something that some professionals did not even know. And for almost two years this blog emerged.

The reasons that led us (my husband and I) to create have been many expalined and I tell the story of Arnau, their setbacks and developments in other entries of this blog, but would say that the main reasons are:

1 - Raise awareness of the Oculomotor Apraxia
2 - Support and help people who have it and their families if they need
3 - Find out why, when and how it is produced (OMA)
4 - Be informed of the progress of the Oculomotor Apraxia, their stages, their levels and the damages in different areas of physical and intellectual people who suffer
5 - Knowing that solutions, treatments, therapies and support is available right now for Oculomotor Apraxia
6 - Meeting other people with Oculomotor Apraxia to his life experiences and help us with it.

This blog has slowly grown and I can say I'm happy to have helped some people, but I will be happier if I  know that apraxia is treated and that no one suffers.

For all this, for our son Arnau, for all children and people with this type of apraxia, we decided that today, April 7 and April 7 all in eternity will be, at least for my family, the INTERNATIONAL DAY THE OCULOMOTOR APRAXIA.
We have also created this little symbol to accompany it and I hope and wish that you like.

Although there is no consensus yet in the world but people, mostly English speaking, having a support group on Facebook created by a wonderful person called Stephen and now managed, tracked and supported by great mothers of toddlers with Oculomotor Apraxia.

Somehow I want to make this little tribute to the people, especially mothers, whostruggle daily to make this world a better place and people with messages telling us how they live their lives and go forward, giving us a great relief (thanks to Nicole, Shannon, Stephen, for your messages etc) and this is reflected in the Facebook group and on their blogs.

You can also find on this blog, on the right side the links to the blogs of some English-speaking mothers and would like you to have them read by the great help and information they contain.

Indeed, there is a google translator on the side of blog to read the blog in almost any language, but probably is not the best translation, although is always a help, in the same way that helps me with all the information you find in other languages.

But something I have clear, is that when Arnau ask me for responses at least I can give him some, the rest will take the road that maybe he will, but certainly does not end with a blog, since projects are not missing and wanted either.
